28.10.1999 – 9.1.2000 New Scandinavia Current design from the distant north
As refreshing as an iceberg is how British designer Jasper Morrison sees the
work of his Scandinavian colleagues. Since the 1980s their works have been
enjoying an ongoing boom on the international stage, not just with regard
to furniture design but also, among other things jewelry, glass, porcelain
and textiles, not to mention tools, household goods and high-tech products.
For this reason the exhibition’s wide-ranging spectrum includes both
interior and industrial design, as well as arts and crafts objects and graphic
design, from the 1980s through to the present day – from Denmark, Finland,
Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
Economic, ecological treatment of the materials is combined with design
principles in which a fresh esprit and clear, straightforward forms, non-dogmatic
functionality and an awareness of people's needs blend to form up-to-date
solutions. The rejection of pomp, paraphernalia and effusiveness is as common
to the Scandinavian designers as is their urban, cosmopolitan mindset and
professional attitude. Given these common denominators the peculiarities
of the individual countries become all the more striking.
The approximately 150 objects selected for display in The Neue Sammlung
represent a varied cross section of this lively scene.
To complement this holistic view, until December 12 the European Patent
Office will be showcasing "empty spaces – design for tomorrow's
world" which focuses on current trends in Scandinavian furniture design.
