Haus der Gegenwart / Modern day houses
34 models for a new home

in collaboration with SZ Magazin

In early May this year one hundred renowned architects from Germany and elsewhere were invited to participate in an architecture competition organized by the newspaper supplement SZ Magazin. The aim was to come up with the modern day house (Haus der Gegenwart), the SZ Magazin house. A home in Central Europe for four people (a family with two children, grandmother, parents and single child, or four people sharing), with around 200 sq.m. of usable space on a 500 sq. m. flat plot of land: all for around EUR 250,000 (building costs only). 45 architects or architects' studios agreed to take part and by the end of June deadline 34 models had been submitted. An international jury selected the modern day house on July 10, 2001.

On account of the new style of urban living it enables, André Poitiers from Hamburg’s Cast House was declared to be the winning model. Its use of unconventional materials on the one hand and the way in which the honeycomb-shaped rooms were divided up on the other, gave it a leading edge over the other entries.   > continue…

Second prize went to the Allman Sattler Wappner studio in Munich. Using a minimum of architectural means the focus here is the possibility of communal living, playfully juxtaposing privacy and openness, home and garden.   > continue…

Third prize went to Ortner & Ortner in Vienna for "The Box". This is a plastered cardboard box, which rigorously delineates between the private and public sphere.   > continue…

Drost & van Veen from Rotterdam received a special prize for "Archimedes". As a result of global warming and the sea level rising, Drost & van Veen vision of a modern day house is a floating house. A houseboat made of steel that floats on the water’s surface like a sculpture. Thanks to solar power and wind energy the house is self-sufficient, which produced some ecology brownie points.
