| Good design can change our lives, as the Munich button manufacturer Kurt Delsing gets to find out. The founder of a design museum set up to compete with The Neue Sammlung in Munich, one of the largest design museums worldwide, is found dead, struck with an up-market luminaire. Or strangled. Whatever, the sharp object is still sticking out of his skull, and is certainly not shining any more. Andreas Mäckler's detective story quite simply turns the strict old "form follows function" theory upside down: whatever can be sharpened to be used as a murder weapon is then used as such.
There is no envying Schorsch Kalder, the Bavarian-American inspector. In the upper echelons of Munich’s high society with their highly styled interiors, in which he has to go about his investigations, he comes across as a bit of a bull in a china shop. Anyone wanting to enquire directly of Andreas Mäckler whether the bloody deed was his way of highlighting the multi-functionality of good design as opposed to a gruesome lack of sensitivity in the world full of beautiful objects will have an opportunity on Thursday April 18 at 7 p.m. in The Neue Sammlung. The reading will be recorded and made available as an audio book to Friends of the Museum, which will re-open on September 12, 2002 in the Pinakothek der Moderne. Further information:
