"Museums in Munich" poster series

Museums in Munich draw attention to themselves… As part of an unusual campaign, all the state and municipal museums in Munich joined forces to produce a series of posters aimed at presenting outside their own four walls their cultural richness and variety.

The series was the outcome of a design competition, in which five internationally renowned designers had been invited to participate: Uwe Göbel, Pierre Mendell, Rolf Müller, Gerwin Schmidt, and Ursula Wangler.

The jury, made up of representatives from the Bavarian Ministry of Culture, the Munich cultural department and tourist office, and the state museums selected the entry submitted by Pierre Mendell, with its rainbow-colored logo that impressively symbolizes the range and vivacity of Munich's museum landscape.

Following publication by the tourist office of a joint information brochure in German, English and Italian, it was now possible to produce Pierre Mendell’s poster series. A "character head" from their collections represents each of the museums, and is aimed at getting observers to take a closer look. However, the poster series is not just an attempt to get the public to visit museums, it is also a "street gallery", for passers-by, strollers, tourists and locals, and the curious from all over the world.

The "Museums in Munich" poster series can be viewed during normal opening hours in the entrance hall of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich: daily except Monday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
