Hufnagl, Director of the Neue Sammlung

On the occasion of Hans Theo Baumann's 80th birthday, his family gifted the Neue Sammlung an extensive cross-section of his oeuvre.

Hans Theo Baumann, who has been described as one of the "grand old men of German design", is one of the great names, which, for more than 50 years, have been a major influence on the "Gute Form" (Good Form) and "Made in Germany" movements. In 1959, he co-founded the Association of German Industrial Designers and became its first President. His work ranges from "studio glass" that was created in Waldsassen, collaboration with the architect Egon Eiermann and an initial futuristic chair design for Vitra, to the legendary porcelain crockery for Lufthansa, and the German Embassy in Brasilia. Porcelain, glass, cutlery, luminaires, furniture, textiles, and even jewelry all form part of his overall output, not forgetting his activities in Japan, where in the early 1980s he collaborated with glass and porcelain manufacturers. Hans Theo Baumann's donation reflects not only the impressive variety in his products and the materials they are made of, it also the many stages along the production path, from initial sketches, plaster models and variations on the design through to the finished product.

We are delighted to have received this donation, which includes fundamental examples of classic German design and represents a superb addition to the museum's collection.
