Breaking taboos, poetry, noblesse, irony and functionality – these are the poles between which the exhibited works by young students from five European design academies oscillate: organically shaped finger food cutlery, multi-functional sets of plates and bowls, light objects, casing for mobile telephones and loudspeakers, a musical interface object… There was no end to the imagination – the only restrictions being the conditions imposed by the porcelain itself, a sophisticated material with a long history behind it. As such there are innovative concepts for home decor and the dining table as well as objects that bear witness to the thought given to concepts that exploit the limitations posed by the material, extraordinary combinations of porcelain with other materials just as much as re-interpretations of classic functions and shapes.

The Neue Sammlung considers providing a forum for young designer generations – particularly in the Pinakothek der Moderne – a very real task for a future-oriented museum of design and applied art, and is attempting to get things really moving in this field. To this end, from the outset the Neue Sammlung acted as partner in the project that held a new, unusually conceived competition for up-and-coming designers announced by Rosenthal AG in Selb together, with the German Design Council in Frankfurt/Main.

The Neue Sammlung is showcasing the results of this first Rosenthal Design Award from Tuesday October 5, 2004 in the Rotunda.

Stefan Diez, a young Munich designer who, as a result of his innovative designs and highly prestigious awards has already made a name for himself in the international arena, was responsible for designing the exhibition, which is being staged directly beneath the transparent dome in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

The motto of the first Rosenthal Design Award was "generations". The ambitious concept behind the competition brought together students from five European design academies and five design stars acting as advisors in preparatory workshops on in-depth appraisal of the topic. Rosenthal, a company that in its 125-year history of porcelain manufacture has repeatedly collaborated with major designers provided the venue and the background for this round of intensive discussions. There are plans to hold the competition every two years from now on.

The outcome of this in-depth preparation were a remarkable degree of variety, surprising solutions and consistently high standards in the 67 entries, from which the esteemed jury selected 19 works to be displayed and unanimously picked the winner and three additional prize winners. The awards will be presented as part of the exhibition opening ceremony.

A catalogue to accompany the "Rosenthal Design Award" has been compiled in collaboration with "form" magazine and is published by Birkhäuser Verlag at a cost of EUR 8.
