The unconventional
concept of a “concert sauvage” implies
secrecy and sheer surprise: Neither the program nor the high-profile
soloists will be announced beforehand. Thus the textual information
on the poster is limited to the date and venue of the concert plus
the name and logo of the orchestra. Other than this the designers
were completely free to find a visual expression for their ideas
and associations with the unusual theme.
The jury which came to a decision on the design proposals submitted
in autumn 2006, consisted of:
-Alexander Liebreich, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the
Munich Chamber Orchestra
-Prof. Dr. Florian Hufnagl, Director, Die Neue Sammlung – State
Museum of Applied Arts and Design
-Thomas Girst, Manager of the KulturKommunikation section of the
BMW Group
The jury voted unanimously in favor of the entry received from Catherine
Zask, Paris. The graphics of the French designer most vividly express
the freshness of a new start, the secret of the concert program and
a wild mysteriousness, while possessing great visual refinement and
appeal.

Catherine Zask counts among France’s major graphic artists.
Her typographical culture posters are distinguished by unusual typeface
handling. She imbues her letters with an authority that is usually
only conferred on images. (Felix Studinka, Museum für Gestaltung
Zürich)
Her work is the expression of a mentality that
is uninterested in decorative sensationalism. Through her generous
use of the surface
she demonstrates the possesive claim for space that characterizes
words. With her sophisticated trimming and cutting of the individual
letters she creates a unique sign language. Even the breathing time,
the space between the words, is an object of her creativity. (Prof.
Uwe Loesch, Düsseldorf. In: Area – 100 graphic designers,
10 curators. London/New York 2003)
The poster for the first “concert sauvage” was realized
in close cooperation with Catherine
Zask; she was also present when
it went to press in northern Munich.
