From the 1960s onwards, the plastic furniture by Italian furniture maker Cassina were just as innovative as the Superleggera chair by Gio Ponti – design icon of the 1950s. Through its research into new manufacturing technologies and materials such as cold foam polyurethane or fiberglass-reinforced polyester Cassina also opened up new avenues for styling, and Italy’s design avant-garde supplied the blueprints. This delight in daring design continues via Postmodernism through to the present-day. Aside from the “Superleggera”, exhibits in the Paternoster room from the Neue Sammlung Collection include creations by Mario Bellini and Gianfranco Frattini, seating by Archizoom – the Florentine initiators of anti-design – and Toshiyuki Kita’s legendary armchair, Wink, not to mention experimental objects by Gaetano Pesce such as “UP”, “Sunset in New York”, “Feltri” and so on.
