Kuramata's design fort his unusual set of drawers incorporated both western traditions and Japanese aesthetics. A classical formal canon determines the strictly geometrical division of the front, with its several drawers. What is particularly striking, however, is the length of the aluminum legs, which, by virtue of the material and their proportion to the rest of the piece imbue it with an extraordinary sense of lightness. This receptiveness to finely balanced shapes and proportions enabled Kuramata to produce an impressive design that sets a highly individual tone in 1970s furniture design. |
