Stories about jewelry by Otto Künzli

A Neue Sammlung event in the
ALL ABOUT ME series – discussions with artists
in the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich
Entrance fee: € 3,-

  otto künzli, heart, 1985

Prof. Otto Künzli (born 1948 in Zurich) is head of the jewelry class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, an outstanding protagonist of contemporary jewelry art and, together with Prof. Hermann Jünger, visiting curator of the Danner Rotunda.

Creating jewelry can involve research – something that is not always directly evident from the piece of jewelry itself. Signs, symbols, figures, colors and ornaments conceal memories, certainties, values and terms, and ideologies, all of which are part of our cultural wealth. Otto Künzli addresses precisely these topics. Familiar things are questioned, explored, transformed and re-defined in terms of statement.
Künzli’s jewelry is straightforward and minimalist, while at the same time rich in meaning and with a pronounced message – one that runs through his entire oeuvre, pronouncing his statements on jewelry to the whole world. His “interpretation” of goldsmithing includes jewelry, and passes judgment within the global discussion about the opportunities art affords.
