The Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2006

The Prize
The Design Award is the official recognition of excellence in design offered
by the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the central thrust in the campaign
of the German Ministry for Economic Affairs to promote good design.
From 2006 the award will be given for exceptional creative achievement in
the fields of product design and communication design. Organisations cannot
apply to be considered for the award, but rather are nominated either at state
level by economic ministries and senators with economic responsibilities or
by the German Ministry for Economic Affairs. It is a condition of this nomination
that the product has already been awarded a national or international prize.
No other design prize presents participants with such a severe criterion.
Altogether, a maximum of 25 products can be honoured with the German Design
Award in the categories Gold or Silver. "The number of prizes has conciously
been kept low and we will continue with this policy in the future", explains
Andrej Kupetz, General Manager of the German Design Council. "Only in
this way can we guarantee a standard of quality appropriate to the prize in
the long term".
Für den Designpreis 2006 waren 865 Erzeugnisse nominiert worden. Die
international besetzte Jury wählte 25 Produkte von besonders herausragender
Gestaltungsqualität aus, für die 20 Preise in Silber vergeben wurden
und 5 Preise in Gold – die "Nobelpreise des Designs".

The exhibition
Die Neue Sammlung and the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure,
Transport and Technology in collaboration with the German Design Council, showcase
the prize-winning products in Nuremberg's Neues Museum – the first
stop on their exhibition tour.
