Graphic design from West Africa: The Neue Sammlung exhibition shows hand-painted posters that have been used in Ghana since the 1980s to advertise action films produced in Africa, as well as Hollywood blockbusters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

The large-format works of the poster painters reveal a very unique, drastic, sometimes shocking graphic language that incorporates local myths as well as stylistic devices from the commercial advertising strategies of Western industrialized nations.

The posters thus go far beyond the appeal of mere exoticism. This example of African graphic design raises questions about “political correctness”, about viewing habits and visual traditions, about cultural constitutions and cultural transfer.

With the oscillating exchange between individual countries and continents in a globalized world, not only goods, technologies or consumer habits are exchanged, but also previously foreign aesthetic ideas and concepts that can permanently change cultures.

With this exhibition, Die Neue Sammlung welcomes its new neighbor, the HFF (University of Television and Film), whose new building will open in the Kunstareal M\u00fcnchen in 2011.
