The Le Nouveau Salon des Cent poster combines art and design from the past and present. It was produced in 2001 to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. To that end, 100 of the world’s leading graphic artists paid tribute to the famous Frenchman by designing posters based on his works. The example shown here was designed by Japanese poster artist Shigeo Fukuda and largely takes its cue from Jane Avril. Jardins de Paris, a poster Toulouse-Lautrec produced in from 1893. While Fukuda shows the French dancer performing as she is in the original, he places a contemporary AIBO ERS-111 in a central position. He thus builds a bridge between historical and contemporary entertainment formats and ironically references the aspect of voyeurism in the electronic age.
