In order to make optimal use of the potential of wood as a natural material, French designer Paule Guérin and her partner, German cabinetmaker Till Breitfuss, created this unusual frame in the shape of an asymmetrical pentagon. The frame is made of 24 layers of ash that are specially aligned and vacuum bonded using a biobased high-performance resin – a method very similar to that used to make hockey sticks and skis. The handlebars and stem are also made of wood. By contrast, the front tube, stem, handlebars, and forks are made of car- bon. The frame shape, the combination of wood as a natural material with modern hightech carbon, and the seamless transition from the wooden frame to the front tube and the stem lend the bicycle an unusual appearance, one emphasized by the absence of a saddle pin – the saddle is mounted direct on the top tube. A series of 20 bicycles was originally planned, each handmade and customized to the owner. However, only five were produced. The exhibited bike is No. 4 of this series.
