Paula Scher designs posters for the Public Theater in New York City for almost 30 years. Her most famous advertising poster for the Public Theater is: Bring in 'da noise, bring in 'da funk. That means: Bring in the noise, bring in the funk. Funk is a type of music that comes from the USA. Bring in 'da noise, bring in 'da funk is the title of a musical. A musical is a theater play with music and dance.
The poster shows the photo of a dancer. There are letters around the dancer and on the dancer. The letters form words. These words are in different sizes. And they are spread all over the poster. The letters seem to swing and are very strong. They stand for energy, movement and volume.
The musical Bring in 'da noise, bring in 'da funk and the posters by Paula Scher were very successful. Other theaters also liked the posters very much. They then copied the style of the posters. But the Public Theater wanted to be different from the other theaters. That is why Paula Scher kept changing her posters.
But 3 characteristics always remained the same: • The shape of the word: Public. The letters of this word are large and thick at the beginning. Towards the end, they become smaller and thinner. • The photos of the people are always only in 2 colours. • The posters also have only a few other colours. But the colours are strong.
The most important thing in Paula Scher's posters is always the writing.
