In her early years as a designer, Paula Scher worked for the music industry. She designed record covers for Atlantic Records and CBS.
There are many styles of music, for example: Classical, Jazz, Pop or Rock. Paula Scher designed the record covers very differently for the different styles. She has developed her own way of working: Most of the time, someone took a picture or a photo for her. Then she designed a matching writing for it.
For two records by the jazz musician Charles Mingus, she designed the record title 3-dimensionally. You can see one of the record covers here. 3-dimensional means: The letters do not look flat. They look like illuminated letters. Like from a cinema or a shop.
All other letters and patterns are only drawn 2-dimensionally. This means that they look flat. On the record cover, there are also wide stripes that run diagonally across the horizontal stripes at 2 corners. The stripes are partly one above the other. This also makes it look 3-dimensional.
