About the Exhibition

In a selection of its highlights, Die Neue Sammlung shows glass in all its technical diversity and brilliant colors.

Glass defines and accompanies our daily lives in all manner of ways. As it is so pervasive we tend to take it for granted yet in terms of its material composition, glass is a high-tech product and manufacturing and refining it requires extensive knowledge. Glass is blown, pressed, shaped in molten form, and then free-formed, etched, or engraved in front of the furnace.

The purpose-designed gallery brings together a selection of highlights: mass-produced hollow glass for everyday use, unique, individually crafted objects, as well as artistic and architectural designs.

The presentation not only showcases the fascination colored and clear glass exert on us, but also reflects technical craftsmanship, a variety of different formal vocabularies, and different functional requirements that glass ideally fulfills.

The spatial concept masterminded by Munich-based design office OHA interweaves design, craftsmanship, and fine art in a quite special manner and simultaneously reflects the museum’s interdisciplinary and international approach.
