Aluminium is one of the materials that had the biggest influence on industry and everyday life in the 20th century, even though it had already been discovered and first exploited back in the 19th century. Due to its versatility and especially its lightness, it went on to shape modern life. By the early 20th century, numerous fields of application had already been found for aluminium, including sport. The Seat of Health is a piece of fitness apparatus that, in its function as an indoor rower, isn’t very different from today’s exercise equipment. When it was made, however, it was very unusual, as sports equipment wasn’t common at the time, and neither was the use of aluminium. The Seat of Health is therefore not so much a curiosity but rather a testament to the powerful impact that technological innovation has had on the development of modern society.
