PIN. Freunde der Pinakothek der Moderne e.V.

Exhibitions, projects, buying pieces of art

PIN. is short for: Pinakothek.
Originally, a pinakothek was a museum
where you could mainly see paintings.

e.V. means: eingetragener Verein.
This is German and means: registered association.
An association is a group of people
who are interested in the same things.

The association PIN. was founded in 1965.
Back then, it was called Galerie Verein.
In English, this means Gallery Association.

Right from the start,
the association wanted to promote modern art.
And it wanted to make art easy to understand for many people,
especially contemporary art.
This still applies today.

PIN. supports 2 art museums in Munich:
Pinakothek der Moderne and Museum Brandhorst.
They are among the most important art museums in Europe.

There are 4 museums in the building of Pinakothek der Moderne.
You can see 4 different types of art there:
• Modern art
• Architecture
• Graphic art
This can be drawings, pictures, and posters.
• Design
The design defines what an object looks like.

Museum Brandhorst has a large collection of art
from the 20th and 21st century.

How does PIN. support the museums?

Pinakothek der Moderne and Museum Brandhorst
are right next to each other.
They have similiar pieces of art in their collections.

PIN. helps them with exhibitions, projects and
when they buy new pieces of art.
PIN.’s goal is to bring more attention to the museums:
they want even more people
to visit the exhibitions at both museums.

PIN. has around 1,000 members.
They organise around 70 events each year:
• Guided tours
• Visits to special exhibitions before their opening
• Visits to studios where artists work
• Talks with artists
• Presentations on art
• Trips

For young people interested in art,
there is the PIN. Young Circle.
People under the age of 40 can join.
PIN. Young Circle has its own program.

Every year in November, PIN. hosts the PIN. Party.
At the party, there is an auction of artworks.
The money goes to Pinakothek der Moderne and
to Museum Brandhorst.
They can use it for special projects.
