The dawn of the modern era and the beginnings of the Neue Sammlung, Germany’s first state-run design museum, are closely intertwined. Its 100th anniversary now provides the occasion for a presentation of selected highlights of modern art, architecture and design from the 1910s to the 1930s, drawn from the collections of all four museums of the Pinakothek der Moderne.
Amidst a period of extreme political instability and rapid social and technological change, one of the most significant aesthetic eras took shape; characterised by radical abstraction and unvarnished realism, artistic and functional objectivity, and designs that were both socially inclusive and exclusive, it profoundly transformed our view of humanity and the world.
