When quiet sounds give rise to powerful emotions, Maria Taylor is never far away. The American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is coming to Munich as part of the new Futuro Sessions series and will be performing her delicate blend of folk, indie rock and melancholic songwriting at the FUTURO-HOUSE on 17 October.
Taylor, born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1976, has been performing on stage since she was 15. Her musical career began with the band Little Red Rocket; she later formed the acclaimed duo Azure Ray with Orenda Fink. Since 2005, she has also pursued a successful solo career, which she has continually developed with albums such as 11:11, Lynn Teeter Flower, LadyLuck and Overlook.
In doing so, Taylor has developed a special feel for the nuances of life: for relationships, goodbyes, longing and all those feelings that are often better hinted at than put into words. Her songs are melancholic without becoming heavy, intimate without being intrusive – and always underpinned by an extraordinary musical sensitivity.
As a multi-instrumentalist, Taylor plays, amongst other things, the guitar, piano and drums. Alongside her own projects, she has collaborated with numerous artists, including Bright Eyes and Moby. Her song ‘Song Beneath the Song’ also found its way into the hit US TV series Grey’s Anatomy.
The fact that her music resonates far beyond the classic indie-folk scene is also illustrated by a small but remarkable piece of pop history: in 2015, Taylor Swift included Maria Taylor’s Azure Ray song ‘Sleep’ in a personal ‘break-up playlist’ for a fan. The song had previously featured in the film *The Devil Wears Prada*.
In her more recent work, including the album *Story’s End*, Taylor reflects on what comes after the end: what remains when a story seems to be over? What can be mended, what must be let go – and what new stories emerge from the fragments of the old ones? Rather than providing grand answers, Taylor approaches these questions with warmth, openness and music that leaves room for personal reflection.
As part of the FUTURO_sessions, Maria Taylor will present a selection from her extensive repertoire alongside new songs. In the unique atmosphere outside the Pinakothek der Moderne, the evening’s concert will unfold, shifting between quiet moments and sweeping melodies, between personal stories and universal emotions.
Maria Taylor on Air – an evening for everyone who wants not only to hear music, but also to feel it.
