Note: The following text refers to an object at a touch station in the X-D-E-P-O-T. It differs slightly from the original. Doesn’t this material sample remind you of washing lines? And indeed Sebastian Herkner used exactly these kinds of plastic lines for Caribe, his green and pink 2-seater bench. This item is part of the Sala outdoor collection which was developed with artisans from the Ames label in Colombia. The dining and lounge chairs, and also occasional tables are based on a steel wire frame and are woven using a technique typical to that country. The six color combinations also reflect their origin. Such local references are characteristic of the German product designer’s drafts. He contrasts our throwaway culture and mass-produced goods with traditional manufacturing methods and a contemporary design. Taking the material of a rotary washing line as a basis would seem to suggest upcycling was the key to producing this item. However, the plastic cords utilized here are new and unused – due to their sturdy elastic quality they are put to clever new use in Herkner’s design.
