The chest-of-drawers that goes by the name of “You can’t lay down your memories” arose in 1991 as a graduation project by Dutch designer Tejo Remy which he submitted at HKU Utrecht. Remy is critical of the purely commercial use of design and rejects the idea of objects that are sleek and impersonal. For his project, Remy chose abandoned drawers from cupboards, desks, stoves, fridges, etc., and created a new wraparound wooden frame. Held together by a belt, the different elements form an unconventional item of storage furniture, that is both provocative and playful. It can be changed whenever you want to and put together differently. (Remy sees his furniture as a metaphor of memory.) In 1993, the chest-of-drawers was presented at the Milan furniture fair as part of the first major display by Dutch designer group droog. It is thus one of the items that led to droog’s worldwide success and symbolizes its radical stance, which is characterized by a critique of consumerism, irony, and a reliance on simple materials.
