The FUTURO is a plastic dwelling standing on a sturdy tubular steel frame. Its shape is suggestive of a UFO. Painted light gray on the outside and orange inside, it has a diameter of 8 meters and a total height of nearly 6 meters, providing living space of about 25 square meters. The FUTURO was originally designed as a ski lodge. The entire living space can be fully heated with electricity in less than 30 minutes. This is made possible by the choice of materials: the walls made of polyester shells reinforced with fiberglass contain polyurethane foam insulation. The FUTURO embodies the architectural visions of the 1960s, when designs for futuristic living spaces were based on new materials. It was a symbol of confidence in science and technology, of the dawn of the Space Age, and of the contemporary quest for new, functional, efficient, mass-producible housing. Its design allowed the FUTURO to be assembled within two days, even in rough terrain, and it could withstand extreme temperatures as well as earthquakes and storms. It’s considered one of the first mass-produced plastic homes to be sold in the world.
