This light is reminiscent of an oversized, 30 cm tall light bulb. Lighting designer Ingo Maurer repeatedly dealt with the form and significance of the light bulb in his work. He originally developed a smaller version called Bulb, which brought him international fame. He had the idea for Bulb in the 1960s while staying in Venice. One evening, while lying on his hotel bed and gazing up at the light bulb suspended from the ceiling, he decided to make the bulb itself the subject of an object. After returning to Munich, he had a large glass bulb blown in Murano, to which he added a metal socket. His main goal was to counteract the often bland, colorless uniformity of light today. Maurer’s designs follow clear concepts, and are simultaneously characterized by beauty, humor, and a well-considered form.
