In her early years as a designer Paula Scher worked for the music industry. She designed album covers for Atlantic Records and CBS. Dealing with an immense range of music styles from Classical music via Jazz through to Pop and Rock, allowed her to try out highly diverse styles and develop her own language as a graphic designer. Paula Scher developed a dedicated visual language for the Tappan Zee Records music label that Bob James established in 1977 and it was used for all the albums released on the label. For the cover a photo of a smaller object was always enlarged so that it could run over the front and rear side of the record sleeve. In this case, it is a hot dog. The front half is intact, while the half on the back of the wrapper has already been heartily bitten off. All the record covers that appeared in this series fold out so that the whole motif can be seen at a glance. The type is relegated to playing a minor role, squeezed into the small space left over by the photographed item.
