In her early years as a designer Paula Scher worked for the music industry. She designed album covers for Atlantic Records and CBS. Dealing with an immense range of music styles from Classical music via Jazz through to Pop and Rock, allowed her to try out highly diverse styles and develop her own language as a graphic designer. Generally speaking, she would commission an illustration or photograph and then create the typography to go with it. For the picture of Leonard Bernstein she drew the colored window herself, then had it made up in glass and finally photographed. For the lettering she chose an old type that roughly coincided with the time the music was composed.
