Dagobert Peche was one of the most talented and most important representatives of Wiener Werkstätte. Founded in 1903, the latter had set itself the goal of masterminding arts-&-crafts objects for all areas of life. Initially, the designs centered around a highly geometrical formal vocabular influenced by architecture. However, with Peche becoming a member in 1915, the focus shifted to involve an extensive ornamentation of the objects. As a result, Wiener Werkstätte blossomed. The joy in ornamentation that was as artistic as it was devoted to every last minute details is also reflected in Peche’s little horse and rider. The artist produced countless designs for fantasy animals that he then had elaborately decorated. Evidence of them is to be found in the photographs and sketches housed in MAK – Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. However, all that has survived is the little horse made of black suede, preserved in Die Neue Sammlung.
