With the “Wurfpuppe” (bendy string dolls, with wooden heads), Alma Buscher created one of the most successful toy innovations of the 1920s. As a student at the Bauhaus School of Art, she primarily created new approaches to children's toy design. To this day, her designs are considered ground-breaking. But what makes the Wurfpuppe so special? Mainly tin toys and dolls dominated the toy market in the first two decades of the 20th century. The toys were designed to be very realistic, thus giving children a clear picture of how they should handle the toy. Especially dolls of that time were, by their nature, more valuable art objects than real toys. Due to the frequent use of porcelain, the dolls were very fragile and the children had to handle them with extreme care. Alma Buscher wanted to approach this differently with her Wurfpuppe. Because, as the name suggests, the Wurfpuppe is intended for unstructured play. The doll’s body is made of braided raffia, which is then wrapped again with soft chenille yarn. Wooden balls represent the head, hands and feet. Although this choice of material makes the doll very robust, the soft surface prevents a high injury risk. The doll’s simple design allowed children to be creative and stimulate their imagination during play. As with other Alma Buscher toys, the Wurfpuppe was designed for play that was more unstructured. The doll could be taken outside, thrown to other players, and could even fall during play. This brought more life into play and revealed new pedagogical possibilities. Alma Buscher wanted to prevent a child from sitting listlessly alone in a corner, carefully playing with delicate dolls. The Wurfpuppe promoted the children's coordination skills and creativity as well as their social skills. Qualities that are as important then as they are now.
