In her early years as a designer Paula Scher worked for the music industry. She designed album covers for Atlantic Records and CBS. Dealing with an immense range of music styles from Classical music via Jazz through to Pop and Rock, allowed her to try out highly diverse styles and develop her own language as a graphic designer. For the two albums by Charles Mingus entitled “Changes” Scher plays with depth. In each case the album title is painted three-dimensionally so that it resembles the neon signs commonly used for cinemas, restaurants, or stores. By contrast all the other letters and patterns are presented as two-dimensional, flat elements without any shading. However, as the multi-colored diagonal strips cross over the horizontal bands of color, they also allude to depth, an overlapping of shapes in space.
