All about Games

Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum has developed a game in collaboration with and for schools: In “Design in Line,” design principles are made accessible and objects from the collection are explored in a playful way.
To mark the launch, the museum has put together a diverse program of fun activities, to which everyone is warmly invited:

Thu, June 11, 2026, 6:00 p.m.
Designing Games: Game Presentation with Playing History

and Panel Discussion with Dr. Reiner Knizia, Dr. Martin Thiele-Schwez and Dr. des. Petra Fuchs
in the Auditorium of the Pinakothek der Moderne

How is a game developed? Why use game-based approaches in museums and schools? How does game-based learning work? What role can play have in human development and society? What are the steps involved, from the initial idea through design to the finished game? How do digital games differ from board games?

Leonie Wolf leads an engaging discussion on “Designing Games” and game-based learning.

Sat, June 13, 2026, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
SpielArt – Board Games at the Museum: a collaboration with the Oberföhring Board Game Club
on the rooftop terrace at Flux (outdoors)

Experience design and art through play—that’s what SpielArt is all about! Sort design objects in TRND, efficiently furnish your apartment in “Verplant und zugestellt,” design your museum in “Gallerist,” or sell art yourself in “Modern Art.”
The games are quick to explain and play. Experts from the Oberföhring Board Game Club will explain the games—just stop by and start playing right away! But be warned: there’s a risk of having fun and gaining new art knowledge.

The event is for adults, families, and children ages six and up.

Sat, June 13, 2026, 4:00 p.m.
Film screening “Die Herren der Spiele” (Language: German): a collaboration with Dok.Fest Munich
in the auditorium of the Pinakothek der Moderne

Slipping into a different skin. For Chris, Nick and Matthias this is not just wishful thinking. They can transform themselves into whatever they want, whether it be an elf a zombie or a knight. Fantasy knows no boundaries. Like thousands of others in Germany the three of them are avid live action role players. Over the course of a weekend they can escape their everyday life as teachers students or pharmacists and fulfil their secret childhood dreams. By contrast to video games, the other players here are as present as one’s own heartbeat. With powerful images and a strong sense of irony, the film whisks us away to an unfamiliar place, a long-established firm hold in the lives of many. Anne Thomé
