Marcel Breuer is best known for his tubular steel furniture, but he also manufactured wooden furniture for private clients. This cupboard was owned by Gertrud and Ludwig Grote. The latter held the position of Head of the Anhalt State Conservation Office. In 1925, acting on behalf of the Mayor of Dessau, he negotiated the relocation of the Bauhaus from Weimar to Dessau. In 1927 he had the interior of his official apartment designed by Marcel Breuer.
